Joanne is an award-winning Board Certified Medical Illustrator and Founding Partner and Creative Director of Haderer & Müller. Joanne lends the company her hand for illustration, her eye for graphic design, and her mind for organizing complex information and creating accessible, engaging content.
With almost 20 years’ experience collaborating with clients nationally and internationally, Joanne’s work has ranged from patient education figures for low-literacy populations to complex surgical illustrations for specialists. She has served as a design, illustration, and content consultant to long-term clients including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and UpToDate Inc, and has served many best-in-class research institutions, physicians, and medical schools. Whether the project is small or large, she believes in professional, productive, and pleasant collaborations… and, of course, a quality product!
Joanne earned a master’s degree in Medical and Biological Illustration from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the most prestigious of the 4 accredited programs of its kind in North America. She also graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Commercial Art. Joanne is one of an elite group of about 270 Certified Medical Illustrators in the world.
Joanne began her career with the co-founding of the first biomedical illustration and anaplastology studio in Portugal, where she illustrated medical and scientific subject matter and helped Portuguese patients as an anaplastologist. She completed additional training in anaplastology in Toronto, Canada, and Goteborg, Sweden.
Joanne is an active Professional Member of the Association of Medical Illustrators and has served on its Board. She was elected Chair of the Board of Governors and Vice Chair of the Board of Governors. She has served on numerous AMI committees including Finance, Sponsorship/Grants, Professional Guidelines, and the Executive Committee. She is also a member of AIGA and the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA).
Joanne’s professional interests include adult learning theory, information design, and user experience design. She is fascinated with the science of learning as it relates to visuals and the advancement of medical education.
Joanne is also Director of Creative Media at Harvard Medical School where she leads a team of biomedical illustrator/animators and video producer/editors in the creation of multimedia educational content for Harvard’s online medical education materials known as HMX.
