Deep brain stimulation

This patient education illustration shows a potential location for surgical implantation of electrodes used in deep brain stimulation, as well as the battery-powered implanted pulse generator (IPG), the lead, and the extension.

The IPG sends electrical impulses to particular areas of the brain for treatment of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease as well as non-Parkinsonian essential tremor.
