Developmental dysplasia of hip

  • Previous »

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) includes a range of conditions related to hip development in infants and young children. Causes may include abnormal development of the acetabulum and proximal femur and mechanical instability of the hip joint. The goal of treatment is permanent concentric reduction of the hip, ideally with the cartilage of the acetabulum in contact with the cartilage of the femoral head.

This illustration shows several potential obstacles to reduction of a dislocated hip: medial capsular constriction, inverted labrum, neolimbus, pulvinar, hypertrophied ligmentum teres and transverse acetabular ligament, and tight iliopsoas tendon.
