External ventricular drain

An external ventricular drain (EVD) is a device used to alleviate swelling and increased pressure within the brain when the outflow of cerebrospinal flow (CSF) is obstructed due to trauma or other abnormality. A plastic tube inserted into the ventricles of the brain (usually the front horn of the lateral ventricle) drains CSF (and sometimes blood) and monitors intracranial pressure.
