Lumbar puncture

A lumbar puncture (or spinal tap) is performed to collect cerebrospinal fluid for evaluation or for therapeutic purposes such as spinal anesthesia or the relief of elevated intracranial pressure.

The patient lies in a fetal position or sits with head and neck bent forward. The needle is inserted between L3/L4 or L4/L5 until it passes into the subarachnoid space.
