From small pox to the flu to HPV, a vaccine primes our body to be ready to fight the onslaught of a particular pathogen later in life.

This illustration is one in a series developed for multilingual patient guides designed by Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and Institute for Health Policy to educate low-literacy and immigrant populations about basic health care.

Consideration was given, at every stage, to the intended audience. The ethnicity, gender, and dress of the characters, the color palette, the ability to print illustrations on low quality black and white printers, and especially the labels, were all important factors.
