Certified Medical Illustrator
Medical illustrators already travel in a pretty unique and specialized circuit—with one foot in the world of creative visual communication and the other in the evidence-based realm of modern medicine. It serves us well. Even so, sometimes it’s just not enough!
As with many professionals in the medical field, a medical illustrator may choose to distinguish herself through certification (CMI).
There are currently only approximately 270 Certified Medical Illustrators worldwide. The certification program follows standards established by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Certification is valid for 5 years and requires ongoing completion of CEUs in Biomedical Science, Art, and Business.
Certification is a program endorsed by the AMI to encourage lifelong learning and to measure professional competency for those illustrators and clients who voluntarily desire such credentialing. Similar to specialty certification for physicians, the competency evaluation consists of a written test and a practicum… A CMI has successfully passed examinations in business practices, ethics, biomedical science, and drawing skills and has undergone a rigorous portfolio review.
